Day 19: Van Horn TX to Marfa TX

Today I give a big shout out to my Pop… he turns 83 today.  He my biggest fan and watching the ride every day.  Love you Pop and Happy Birthday.

Todays ride went at planned.  74 miles, the nasty 1% uphill all the way and into a wind.  I made the journey in less than 6 hours and was happy.  Today was all about settling into Marfa TX for a rest day.  Well plans change and Marfa Monday is not going to happen.  You can tell this town is hopping on the weekends but Monday, not so much.  We plan to get up tomorrow and have a breakfast burrito at the local Texmex plac and move to Alpine about 25 mile down the road.  Alpine has a Walmart and hopefully a few open restaurants.  We will call this an active rest day.

Leaving after a great Breakfast in the café.

Todays ride was through Texas desert and the scenery did not change much all day.

There were a few highlights.   Today I saw my first boarder crossing capture.  Border Patrol had what I can only guess is a Mexican trying to cross into the US in handcuffs.   Everyone has their opinions on this so I will not touch the subject.

Not so fast, young man...

Just outside of Valentine TX is the most unusual thing I might have ever seen.  A piece of art that shows of a Prada store – yes, the purses.  It was cool to see a modern looking store front in the middle of desert Texas.  There were many people stopped to take pictures.  The picture below as only a sample of the people dressed up to stop for a picture.

Later in the ride, there were these larger than life people.   I was told that Judy Garland filmed the move Range in the 50’s and this a tribute to the movie.  If anyone knows more, let all of us know.

More pics form the day...

You have to wonder, this was in someone's yard.

My view for most of the day...
Long miles

Another train pic

When I arrive at camp, we set up a bit and headed off or drinks & dinner.

For food today, I had a Cliff Bar before lunch and Sandy passed me at about 3 hours with a Subway 6” Italian.  I add 2 Oreo cookies and a banana.  I finish almost 2 water bottles before lunch, drank my full bottle at lunch and at least one more bottle after lunch.  Yes… I drank a lot today.

Another Great Lunch

1% over a lot of miles looks bad...

The plan for tomorrow was to have a rest day but we are adjusting.  We will move about 25 miles to Alpine and see what is going on in this town.
