Day 21: Alpine TX to Sanderson TX

We packed up camp this morning expecting a long day... after resting yesterday I was ready to go.

Three Weeks on the Road
Still Smiling at least in the morning.

Not much to say about the towns we traveled through today.  The 86 miles form Alpine to Sanderson was wide open with the only town in between being Marathon TX.  There was not much in Marathon and the same in Sanderson.  It is Tuesday in Sanderson and apparently all the restaurants are closed on Monday & Tuesday.   We did manage to find one place that was selling Pulled Pork Sandwiches as a fund raiser to help pay funeral expenses for someone who died recently.  We were happy to contribute and take three sandwiches back to camp.

The ride today was into another punishing wind.  Thank goodness for the mostly downhill last 30 miles.  That 1% uphill finally gave some back and helped me make it to town.

This is what I looked at most of the day
Miles ahead of me

Scenery from today…

Camp for the night is not much but OK for $7, we have a bathroom and a shower is $3.

Today’s ride stats:

Start Time: 8:40 AM Central Time             Finish Time: 2:56 PM Central Time

Distance: 86.4 Miles                                    Average Speed: 15.5 mph

Climbing/Descent: 1214/2808 Ft.                TSS:  160

Average Power: 160 Watts                           Normalized Power: 168 Watts

Calories: 3214                                              Ave/Max HR: 121/136 bpm

Stopping time today was mostly lunch and taking pictures.  I am having a problem with a bolt coming loose on my left peddle.  I must tighten it a few times a ride.  The next town with a store we will be buying lock tight.

For food today I had one Cliff Bar and two Oreo’s while riding.  Today’s lunch was, you guessed it, a ham sandwich, banana and two more Oreo’s.  For drinking, finished 2 water bottles during the ride, one Gatorade at lunch and a bunch of water at lunch.

Tomorrow’s ride is going to be more bone crushing wind,   so we are going to shoot for 60 miles to Langtry TX.  My Dad already sent me the run down on Langtry – population is 12 people (In 2016) so we are not expecting much.

  2. I have slightly different stats, and show that if you take your scheduled breaks, at 0 miles, it’s more likely that you get to NSB about April 15, just in time to pay your toll...I mean taxes!!!

On the other hand, if you continue with your current average, you could get to NSB by April 8.

The weekend is April 10-11....just sayin!
