Day 24: Rest Day in Del Rio TX

I am writing this on the morning of Day 25 after forgetting an update yesterday.  Sandy and I spent a relaxing morning in a Holiday Inn Hotel taking care of personal business, charging all our electronics, doing laundry, and just relaxing.

Later in the day we went out looking around.

Old town Del Rio

The Old Kress sign is cool, sure nothing was 5-cents.

Lunch in Del Rio... Mexican of course

The Old and New wall...
On Friday afternoon there was no work going on.

In our quest to see the Rio Grande we got stopped.

List of thoughts...

Favorite ride, by far, has been Day 14.  The ride through the Gila National Forest and over Emory Pass was spectacular.   This day might rank as my favorite day riding a bike ever.

Least favorite (or sucky) ride was Day 17 into Van Horn.  This was a short 35-mile ride into a bone crushing head wind that took 3.5 hours.  Close behind was Day 13 into Silver City.  The ride to Silver City had climbing and things to see along with a big head wind.

Rio Grand river sightings - None.  The tourist part of the Del Rio around the Rio Grande has been shut down with the increased sensitivity to illegal immigrants and building of the new wall.

Mexican Trinkets found - None, I am not to upset.  This would have gone into a drawer and never seen again.

Coolest people we met - it’s a tie between the guy in Langtry TX riding for cancer and lady Sandy met in Comstock TX.  I wrote about the Langtry guy a few days ago but did not mention the lady.  Sandy noticed the lady wearing a pick cancer shirt and the lady noticed Sandy's short hear.  They both made the immediate connection and talked about their experiences.  The lady drove off and few minutes later came back with four cancer tokens.  They ladybugs with pink ribbons on them.  The intent is to pass them on when you meet others in need of support.

Best town so far - again it is close between Alpine TX and Silver City NM.  Alpine wins on the strength of my favorite bar ever.  Don't get me wrong, I would not move to either town.

Statistics - we have been on the road 24 days and camped 15 nights and spent 9 nights in hotels.  We have taken 2 full rest days and traveled 1,417 miles so far.

  2. Saw a tv interview along the border today. Saw the wind you were (are) fighting. Very nasty. Hope you are out of it soon. Pop
