Day 25: Del Rio TX to Campwood TX

We left the Holiday Inn this morning for another windy day of riding.

After a few hours we made it to Campwood TX.  The wind was in my face for 40+ miles, sort of cross wind for another 20 and behind me for the last 20 miles.  It was great going 20 mph on roads that just hours before I was struggling to get 12 mph.  When I arrived at camp, Sandy was siting with the tent on the ground and wondering what to do.  The wind was a steady 15~20 mph with gust much larger.  After some discussion and a few beers, we moved in front of a building that is blocking the wind.  We are expecting our first bout of rain tonight so we will see how the tent hold up.  Luckily the building we are in front of is open, I put my bike inside and we are moving a bunch of stuff in as well.

Our camp for night 25...

The ride today was fun.  The sites were nice and even thought it was into the wind most of the day I felt like I was making progress most of the day.  The most interesting thing that happened today was being stopped by a local farmer.  He was warning me about the Mexican illegals in the area and how dangerous it was.  The entire time we talked, he was sitting in his 4-wheeler with a rifle by his side.  When I commented on the rifle he showed by his pistol as well.  I wish I had the picture for you but it was not the time to pull out my phone for a shot (no pun intended).

There were a few interesting sites…

The road through a river...
Sandy saw this before me and we both were amazed.
The road is on the bottom of the river.  When there is water, there is no road.

All pics below are from Brackettville
I road through but this was an interesting place.

My first look at the Texas Hills
This will be my home for the next few days.

As mentioned, the ride was again focused on the wind but fun.

Today’s ride stats:

Climbing/Descent: 1939/1614 Ft.             TSS: 162

For food today, I had a Cliff Bar before lunch and then Sandy arrived with my typical lunch, ham sandwich, banana, muffins, and a lemon aid.  This was enough to get me to camp.  On the ride I finished 4 water bottles.  As I arrived at camp, my back bottle hold broke and fell to the road.  The screw that clamps the holder to my seat snapped.  It is repairable but I need to find the right size bolt. For the next few days, I will go with two water bottles.

For tomorrow it will be a climbing day.  The map shows 6K up and 6K down on our way to Ingram TX.  The ride is another 80+ so we will see how it goes.  The wind is forecast to shift tonight which will not help.  Wish me luck!!!
