Day 30: Somerville Lake (Gay Hill) to Sam Houston National Forest (West of New Waverly TX)

Camp last night was a windy at 15~20 mph all night.  We watch many tent campers pack it up and go home.  I will give big kudos to a Dad and his young son who stuck it out and were there this morning.  Leaving camp, we still had 10+ mph winds and it was cold.  Coffee and breakfast were in the tent.   By the time I got 5 miles into the ride and off the lake all was good and friendly winds prevailed for most of the day.

Day 30 not to much longer...

Cold Morning.

Mid-ride I caught up to the John and Paul, the guys we met a few days ago.  Ends up they visited a friend in Austin and fell back to me.  It was good to ride with them for a while, we also met up with a  guy heading West.  If I recall head said he left on Valentine’s Day so he is 30+ days into his ride.  John & Paul are still committed to 5-April in St. Augustine so I will be falling behind.

Today’s ride was filled with historic, old buildings.  I wish I could have taken pictures of all of them, but all the little towns were cool.   Independence was the coolest of all…   I took pictures of only a few of the buildings but the history and oldness of the place was fantastic.

Camp tonight is in Sam Houston National Forest, open space which is code for free.  Paul and John are joining for diner.  They will be out early and well ahead before I open my eyes.

Paul & John Riding into Camp

The ride today was simple with good winds.  Lots of up and downs.  We are out of the Texas Hill country, but no one told the hills, still plenty of ups and downs.

Lunch today was on the steps of the public library in Navasota TX with Paul and John.  Unfortunately, hungry bellies got in the way of taking a picture so no proof on this one.  Sandy picked up a burrito at the store down the street and I added a few muffins and potato chips to the mix.  Prior this I had a Cliff Bar and an Oreo.  For drinks today, it was cold, so I did not drink much but I finished a lemonade Sandy bought for lunch.

Tomorrow’s ride is still up in the air.  I want to do another 60~70 mile day but the towns and camping look limited.  This might force us to a shorter day (50 miles) or longer day (100 miles).  I don’t want to do 100 miles.
