Day 39: Poplarville MS to Gautier MS (Shepard State Park)

Here is what I want to say…   all RV parks should allow tent camping.  The plan today was to stay close to Vancleave MS in an RV park.  Well, the park we planned on was terrible, and I would not suggest anyone stay there.  Sandy went to the next site and the next site only to find out that they do not allow tents.  We could have double back or went way off route, but I did not want to waste miles.  After all of this Sandy found Shepard State Park near Gautier MS.  The expected 70ish mile ride ended up at 87 miles.  To continue my complaining, we called ahead to several campgrounds on and near Dauphin Island.  Again, no tents allowed… what the F$#%^&.  We will be in a B&B tomorrow night and catch the ferry to FL on Monday morning.  The lady at the B&B was very nice on the phone and gave us a discount after we explained the tent story.  She even tried to help us find a camp site.   

In the end our camp for the night is fantastic, just a mile or so from the Gulf of Mexico.  The temperature is warm, but the humidity is good.   We have fans for the tent so sleeping will be OK.

The ride today was long but not to hard.  Most of the day there were rolling hills.

Day 40 is coming

Early the wind was helping and later in the day it was in my face – not a bone crushing wind but enough to notice.   Along the way the roads were almost perfect for riding, hard to believe in the middle of Mississippi.  Most of the way was line with pine trees, this looks to be logging country.  You can tell most of the land was replanted.

I did pass through De Soto National Forest which was not too much different than the rest of the ride.

There were several very nice ranches and houses along the way, there is money in this area.

Prior to lunch, I had my normal Cliff Barr and Sandy met me around 50 miles.  You guested it, I had a ham sandwich, banana and a Gatorade.  I drank a bunch today, at lunch both bottles were empty.  At lunch I filled up with water and drank one of those. After lunch I stopped at a gas station for 2 Gatorades and polished them off in the parking lot.  Heat and humidity changes everything.

For tomorrow the ride is contained… I hope.  It is 50 miles to the B&B on Dauphin Island.  We will spend the night and get on the fairy the next day and ride 40 miles to a camp site we have reserved.  After that it is off to Denny’s house (Sandy’s brother) for our final rest day.

Moving Day is Tomorrow

 10/30/2020 Tomorrow is moving day… yeh.    It was a long wait but just one more night and we are on the road.   The moving truck is supposed to show up at 8:00AM and have us out of here before the end of the day.   Let’s hope, not too much has gone as plan so far on the move.    Sandy and I are killing time with margaritas and hanging out with our stuff.   Bessy is packed with everything we will need for the next month (we hope) and maybe more.    After they load the truck tomorrow, we are off.   First stop will be a night in Bakersfield CA tonight and then on to Independence CA in the morning.    People only go to Independence CA for one thing…    to ride Onion Valley Rd.    Cannot wait and more tomorrow when we are on the road. Good by Tennessee, Hello Kentucky

 11/14/20 11/14/20 Time fly’s by…   it has been 3 days since I last posted something.   Let’s recap for you.   We had our 1st camp fire.   Sandy and I spent the last 6 nights camping.   We were lucky and showered on day 2 but have been without since.   That means 5 days without a shower.   We spent 3 nights at the 101 Marina, what stood out is each night was colder than the one before, but the days would warm up to be nice.    We spent more time inside the car/tent than normal.   After 101 Marina we headed east about 5 hours to Fort Pillow State Park in Tennessee.     On the way I we crossed the Mississippi River, what a treat.   There were several very large barges just under the bridge, the river was huge.    The Tennessee state line must be in the middle of the Mississippi. Day 38: Amite City LA to Poplarville MS

We wasted a night in a hotel last night thinking it was going to rain.  I finished yesterday in a drizzle but by 6PM last night it was clear and no rain.  We left from the Comfort Inn in Amite City with the usual daily enthusiasm.   Ready for another day... Wasted a night in a hotel, weather was nice this morning. The highlight of today was leaving Louisiana and crossing the Mississippi border (No jokes about yesterday, I know I was a day early).  If this tells you anything the ride was generally boring today, nothing to see.   This is a make up picture for when we entered LA There was no sign on the West side so we got it going out!!!! We will only be in this state for a couple of days. I was expecting about a 70 mile day.  When we stopped for lunch in Bogalusa LA, I was at 50 miles and the ACA route said 30 more to go.  I was not looking forward to the extra 10 miles.   The best lunch in town... I am in my chair in the background....
