Day 40: Gautier MS (Shepard State Park) to Dauphin Island AL
Today was a scheduled easy day and that is what we got. The ride from Shepard State Park to Dauphin Island was about 47 miles with most of it helped by a good tail wind. Only the final 7 miles over the bridges onto the island had a head wind. As mentioned yesterday, there is no place on the island to camp, so we are in a Dauphin House Harbor House B&B for the night.
On the dock after after a short ride. |
We would rather be outside, but I must say the winds are high tonight. This is a fishing town so tomorrow does not look good. As B&B’s go this is a fishing stop, not much in the way for charm.

Leaving Camp this morning |
I missed the picture high light for today, we passed into Alabama. Apparently, I missed the sign and Sandy was certain I would stop and take a few pictures. Oh well, we are in Alabama for one night. Tomorrow morning, we will catch the ferry into Florida. After missing the sign, the highlight of the ride was watching TJ land a giant red fish. About a mile out of last night camp, I rode up on a guy landing the big boy below on a little real. It was fun to watch. It was only 9AM so the guy had a good day before it really got started.

The rest of the ride was on Highway 90 which had no sites to speak of other than the bridge going into Dauphin Island. The view was really very nice, but the clouds made picture taking difficult. It was a little intimidating looking at the bridge and knowing the wind was howling.

The plan for the day was for Sandy to pass me by and head to
the B&B. About 3 miles into the
ride, I hit a bunch of glass that cut my back tire and gave me a quick
flat. I filled up with my hand pump and Sandy
stopped with the real pump as she passed by.
I took the chance to eat a muffin and fill up the water bottle. The sad story is Sandy left the stop with the
back open and had to pick up our belongings from the road. A small error and things are just a bit more
used.
The big hills on the profile are bridges |
Tomorrow will be fun. We have been waiting for the ferry ride since was started. The plan is to wake up for 8AM breakfast and catch the 11AM ferry to Fort Morgan FL. After that it will be 40 miles to our camp site, which we have reserved. The next day will be a good ride to Denny’s place.
Interesting Picture for today... Who came up with this name for a cemetery. |
Scary bridge, wind or no.
ReplyDeleteThat bridge looks way too ominous
