Day 46: Torreya State Park (Outside of Bristol FL) to Tate's Hell Womack State Park (Outside of no where)

After a short ride today, we are sitting having a beer on the bank of the Ochlockonee River in Tate's Hell Womack State Park.  The river is stunningly beautiful and very quiet.  No car, boat, dog, people, etc. noise.   There are others in the park, but it seems like we are by ourselves.  The temperature is in the high 60’s with full Florida sun.  We took this opportunity to take a nice walk in the pine forest.  This was our 1st chance to take a walk since we started this journey 46 days ago.

Sorry to leave the Yurt..

Sitting by the river

Todays walk

Most of todays was the same view as yesterday.  Long roads with pine trees on both sides.  The ride finished on 5 miles of gravel road back to the river & camp site.  I will double back on this road tomorrow and head south.

The final mile or 5 miles

The winds today were forecast to be very light, but the ride certainly did not feel that way.  A good bit of the ride had cross/head winds.   The roads were nearly perfect most of the ride until the 20 mile stretch through Apalachicola National Forest and Tate's Hell State Forest.

Two Parks...

Same View...

Same crappy road...

I do try to look over every bridge to see the water
This one was nice.

Early in the ride I went through Rock Bluff...  the pictures below would suggest a real town.  Not so... you are looking at everything, minus one house.

Today’s ride stats:

Start Time: 10:00 AM Eastern                   Finish Time: 1:54 PM Eastern

Elapse Time: 3 Hr. 53 Min.                         Ride Time: 3 Hr. 36 Min.

Distance: 54.8 Miles                                    Average Speed: 15.2 mph

Climbing/Descent: 873/1168 Ft.               TSS: 132

Average Power:  179 Watts                       Normalized Power: 191 Watts

Calories: 2314                                               Ave/Max HR: 115/131 bpm

For food today, there was no lunch on the ride.  I had a Cliff Bar and when Sandy passed me she though a banana out of the window – just kidding.  She did stop and we talked for a few minutes, I had a banana and a Gatorade.  She was on her way in just a few minutes.

What? No Lunch

The path to New Smyrna Beach is only 300 miles from where we are but the route is very uncertain.  Finding camp sites that take tents – go figure – is hard.  Most are RV’s only and with the Easter weekend it is hard to call and talk to anyone.   Tomorrow we will leave camp with a general direction and location in mind, but no reserved camp site.  We will see what happens.

The only water tower today was at the jail.
Liberty Correctional Facility

I know it is a weed
But it is a pretty flower

  1. Now that you’ve ridden across the US twice, which state has the best roads? Steve

  2. So today you have to find a bridge, or swim your bike across the river.
