Day 43: Mary Esther FL (Rest Day)

Image
Today was exactly as the title says; a rest day.  Thanks to Denny and Belinda for hosting us for two nights.   I did get up early today around 6AM and did some Ubiquity work.  Late in the morning we headed out for some fun with Denny's friends. They have a shooting range and we had a good time target and skeet shooting.  Sandy came along and had her first experience with a western style 6 shooter.  She was uncomfortable but sucked it up and gave it a try.  She is brave.    Left to right... Chaz, Mike, Steve (me), Denny One thing I did note from today, is Bush Light beer is not that bad.   This could be my go to beach beer for a while.   During the afternoon, I spent some more time on work then we headed out for a German meal.  Belinda is from Germany and Denny spent time there in the military - they met in Germany.  With their help we order some excellent food and I am going to bed full. Tomorrow will be a 60 mil...

Day 42: Big Lagoon State Park (Near Perdido Key FL) to Mary Esther FL

Image
On the eve of a rest day and being at my brother in-law’s house delayed yesterdays update until this morning.  I arrived at Denny and Belinda’s house early in the afternoon and fun began immediately.  Belinda treated us to her Million Dollar Spaghetti dinner. It was delicious.   Million Dollar Good!!! Beer on the Gulf Beech With a short ride planned, the morning started slow, but I ended up leaving around the normal 8:30ish timeframe.   The morning sky was beautiful with the sun rise to the East and the moon to the West.   Taken seconds apart in different directions Ready for a short ride The ride yesterday was interesting through Pensacola FL then turned boring.   There were actual hills in Pensacola that surprised me.   After the city, the ride was two roads, one packed with cars using the only bridge into Gulf Breeze FL and the other US98 filled with shops.   The interesting part of the ride Joe Patti's was recommended by Bob, arrive...

Day 41: Dauphin Island AL to Big Lagoon State Park (Near Perdido Key FL)

We woke up this morning to howling winds, 20+.  We wanted to camp last night, but we felt lucky to be inside for the night.   Last nights gathering at the B&B... Had another lesson on Crawfish eating. As we were going to breakfast, we were informed that the ferry to cross into Fort Morgan AL was closed due to wind.   We ate a good breakfast and agonized over what our plan should be.  The B&B did not have a room and we need to move on, so we packed up and headed to the ferry expecting to wait it out.  We left at the same time and Sandy drove ahead.  When she arrived, the ferry opened and was leaving in 3 minutes for the 1 st run of the day.  She called me and said hurry up… I was a mile away and sprinted to the ferry.  We were lucky and I never put my foot down and road directly onto the boat.  We were lucky and back on schedule.  On the ferry, we met up with a couple, John and Brenda doing the ride like us.  Bre...

Day 40: Gautier MS (Shepard State Park) to Dauphin Island AL

Image
Today was a scheduled easy day and that is what we got.  The ride from Shepard State Park to Dauphin Island was about 47 miles with most of it helped by a good tail wind.  Only the final 7 miles over the bridges onto the island had a head wind.  As mentioned yesterday, there is no place on the island to camp, so we are in a Dauphin House Harbor House B&B for the night.   On the dock after after a short ride. We would rather be outside, but I must say the winds are high tonight.  This is a fishing town so tomorrow does not look good.  As B&B’s go this is a fishing stop, not much in the way for charm.  Mr. Potato Head Leaving Camp this morning I missed the picture high light for today, we passed into Alabama.  Apparently, I missed the sign and Sandy was certain I would stop and take a few pictures.  Oh well, we are in Alabama for one night.  Tomorrow morning, we will catch the ferry into Florida.  After missing the sign, ...

Day 39: Poplarville MS to Gautier MS (Shepard State Park)

Here is what I want to say…   all RV parks should allow tent camping.  The plan today was to stay close to Vancleave MS in an RV park.  Well, the park we planned on was terrible, and I would not suggest anyone stay there.  Sandy went to the next site and the next site only to find out that they do not allow tents.  We could have double back or went way off route, but I did not want to waste miles.  After all of this Sandy found Shepard State Park near Gautier MS.  The expected 70ish mile ride ended up at 87 miles.  To continue my complaining, we called ahead to several campgrounds on and near Dauphin Island.  Again, no tents allowed… what the F$#%^&.  We will be in a B&B tomorrow night and catch the ferry to FL on Monday morning.  The lady at the B&B was very nice on the phone and gave us a discount after we explained the tent story.  She even tried to help us find a camp site.    In the end our cam...

Day 38: Amite City LA to Poplarville MS

Image
We wasted a night in a hotel last night thinking it was going to rain.  I finished yesterday in a drizzle but by 6PM last night it was clear and no rain.  We left from the Comfort Inn in Amite City with the usual daily enthusiasm.   Ready for another day... Wasted a night in a hotel, weather was nice this morning. The highlight of today was leaving Louisiana and crossing the Mississippi border (No jokes about yesterday, I know I was a day early).  If this tells you anything the ride was generally boring today, nothing to see.   This is a make up picture for when we entered LA There was no sign on the West side so we got it going out!!!! We will only be in this state for a couple of days. I was expecting about a 70 mile day.  When we stopped for lunch in Bogalusa LA, I was at 50 miles and the ACA route said 30 more to go.  I was not looking forward to the extra 10 miles.   The best lunch in town... I am in my chair in the background....
